As the MLB postseason approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies face having one of their top hitters out of the lineup.

Second baseman Luis Arráez, the National League's leading hitter, suffered a sprained left ankle during the sixth inning of the Phillies' 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night.

Arráez was attempting to run out a ground ball to shortstop, but Cooper Pratt's throw to first was high and wide. Milwaukee's Jake Bauers jumped to catch the throw, and Arráez moved to his right to elude the tag. However, while diving forward to touch the bag, he appeared to turn his ankle as the front of his foot caught in the dirt.

Adding proverbial insult to injury, Arráez was called out on the play for running out of the baseline to dodge Bauers' tag.

The veteran infielder needed assistance to walk off the field, having difficulty putting weight on his left foot. The Phillies announced that the initial diagnosis for Arráez was a sprained left ankle.

Following the game, Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said X-rays on Arráez's ankle were negative. But he will be re-evaluated on Friday after getting treatment throughout the night.

Arráez was acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the MLB trade deadline for two players, including Philadelphia's No. 4 prospect, pitcher Ramon Marquez. In 188 plate appearances, Arraez has a slash line of .283/.314/.376 with 10 doubles, 2 home runs and 21 RBI. Overall, he leads the NL with a .310 batting average.

The Phillies shuffled their defensive alignment around to put Arráez at second base when he joined the team, moving Bryce Harper to right field, Bryson Stott to third base and Alec Bohm to first.
